When does DDR6 come out?
Short answer: you cannot buy DDR6 today, and you almost certainly won't in 2026. The desktop/server DDR6 specification has not been ratified by JEDEC as of August 2026. Enterprise platforms are expected to adopt first through 2027; consumer desktop DDR6 — a kit you can order with a motherboard that accepts it — is realistically a 2027-or-later event.
Any page giving you a confident single date is guessing. What exists instead is a sequence of gates, each observable when it happens. Here's the sequence and where it stands:
- Done · July 9, 2025 LPDDR6 standard published (JESD209-6)
The mobile half of the generation is final. First LPDDR6 devices land in 2026. This is the strongest signal that the DDR6 era has actually started.
- In progress · 2026 DDR6 specification ratification
JEDEC aimed to finish in 2025–26; timing and signaling parameters are still being refined. Until this document publishes, every "DDR6 spec" you read is a target, not a standard.
- Expected · 2026–2027 Vendor samples & enterprise platforms
Micron, Samsung and SK hynix sample to platform vendors; servers adopt first — the same order DDR5 followed.
- Expected · 2027+ Consumer desktop DDR6
Requires a CPU generation whose memory controller speaks DDR6 and boards to match. No announced consumer socket supports DDR6 as of this writing.
Why 2027 is the realistic consumer floor
DDR5 is the precedent: JEDEC published the DDR5 spec in July 2020, and the first consumer platform that could use it (Intel's Alder Lake) shipped in November 2021 — sixteen months later. Memory generations don't arrive when the spec publishes; they arrive when a CPU's memory controller does. With DDR6 unratified in mid-2026, applying the same gap lands consumer availability in late 2027 at the earliest — and DDR5's own launch slipped from initial industry chatter, so treat even that as the optimistic branch.
What could move the date
- Earlier: AI-driven demand is the wildcard this cycle didn't have last time. Server vendors desperate for bandwidth could pull enterprise adoption forward — but that accelerates servers, not your desktop.
- Later: ratification slipping past 2026, or the first consumer platform choosing to ride mature (cheap, fast) DDR5 one more generation — exactly what several platforms did with DDR4 in the DDR5 transition.
What to do in the meantime
